Magic Mushrooms are mushrooms that contain psilocybin, which is a psychedelic drug with similar effects to those of LSD. Psilocybin mushrooms have been used by many indigenous cultures to induce altered states of consciousness during religious rituals. BRIEF HISTORY Hallucinogenic mushrooms have a history that dates back as far as 1 million years ago, originating in East Africa. Early hominids such as Homo africanus, Homo boisei, and the omnivorous Homo habilis expanded their original diets of fruit and small animals to include underground roots, tubers, and corms. It is said that at this particular time, early hominids gathered Psilocybin mushrooms off the African grasslands and ate them as part of their diet. With the domestication of cattle, Hominids found themselves within greater proximity to cattle, and thus, increased contact with the mushrooms because they grow only in the dung of cattle. However, more than 20% of the participants described their psilocybin sessions as dominated by negative feelings such as anxiety. And while psilocybin mushrooms appears to mimic the brain signaling-chemical serotonin, the mushrooms precise action on the mind function remains elusive. HOW ARE THEY USED Magic mushrooms are either eaten raw, mixed with food, or brewed into a tea. These mushrooms can be eaten fresh or dried for later use. There is no predictable way of estimating the amount of psilocybin in each mushroom. The amount is determined by the strain, size and age of the mushroom. It is better to start with a small amount before deciding to take more because this can prevent having too strong a trip, and may minimize the chace of being poisoned from the wrong type of mushroom.
