WHAT ARE MAGIC MUSHROOMS

Salvia Divinorum

Magic Mushrooms are mushrooms that contain psilocybin, which is a psychedelic drug with similar effects to those of LSD.   Psilocybin mushrooms have been used by many indigenous cultures to induce altered states of consciousness during religious rituals.  Some individuals even believe they have a magical, spiritual effect on people.

Psilocybin is found in mushrooms such as the liberty cap, Psilocybe semilanceata and about 186 other species.  During the 1960s hippies embraced the mushrooms after its mind-altering potential was touted by timothy Leary, then a researcher at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.  But as its use grew, US lawmakers took action.  It is now generally illegal to sell or possess psilocybin drugs in the US.

BRIEF HISTORY

Hallucinogenic mushrooms have a history that dates back as far as 1 million years ago, originating in East Africa. Early hominids such as Homo africanus, Homo boisei, and the omnivorous Homo habilis expanded their original diets of fruit and small animals to include underground roots, tubers, and corms. It is said that at this particular time, early hominids gathered Psilocybin mushrooms off the African grasslands and ate them as part of their diet. With the domestication of cattle, Hominids found themselves within greater proximity to cattle, and thus, increased contact with the mushrooms because they grow only in the dung of cattle. The Psilocybin-containing mushrooms that were thought to have grown on the grasslands at that time were the Panaeolus species and Stropharia cubensis, also called Psilocybe cubensis, which is the famous "Magic Mushroom" widely distributed today. As a result of their contact, the codependency between humans and mushrooms was enhanced and deepened.

MYSTICAL EFFECT

According to research a study conducted by Roland Griffiths, of John Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland was conducted whereby one-third of the participants had a “complete” mystical experience after taking psilocybin, with half of them describing their encounter as the single most spiritually significant experience in their lifetimes.

However, more than 20% of the participants described their psilocybin sessions as dominated by negative feelings such as anxiety.  And while psilocybin mushrooms appears to mimic the brain signaling-chemical serotonin, the mushrooms precise action on the mind function remains elusive.

Griffiths says that in the future psilocybin mushrooms might have a therapeutic use, perhaps helping individuals who have just learned that they have cancer or some other debilitating disease, come to terms with the news.  But, he is quick to add that “the therapeutic application is very speculative.

HOW ARE THEY USED

Magic mushrooms are either eaten raw, mixed with food, or brewed into a tea.  These mushrooms can be eaten fresh or dried for later use.  There is no predictable way of estimating the amount of psilocybin in each mushroom.  The amount is determined by the strain, size and age of the mushroom.  It is better to start with a small amount before deciding to take more because this can prevent having too strong a trip, and may minimize the chace of being poisoned from the wrong type of mushroom.

WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS

At low doses, magic mushrooms produce feelings of relaxation, not dissimilar to those of cannabis.  Individuals often experience fits of laughter and report laughing a lot and finding things funnier than they would normally.

At high doses, the experience is closer to that of the hallucinogen LSD, intensifying colors and producing visual hallucinations and feelings of euphoria.  A mushroom trip usually lasts for about four to five hours, and individuals often report the mushroom experience to be more “earth” than other psychedelics, increasing emotional awareness an causing less psychological confusion.

And, as mentioned above, many individuals find the mushroom experience to be magically, spiritually significant while others find it frightening.

BE CAUTIOUS

One of the greatest dangers associated with magic mushrooms is not be able to identify them.  Some mushrooms are dangerous and poisonous and cause stomach pains, vomiting, diarrhea and even death.

Magic Mushrooms may impair judgment, and driving while 8under the influence of mushrooms is dangerous.

They can trigger underlying mental disorders and cause schizophrenic-type symptoms.

Users may have “bad trips”, which may include confusion, anxiety and panic.

Remember, Magic Mushrooms are illegal and possession can result in long prison terms.  Supplying mushrooms to someone else (whether money was exchanged or not) carries even longer sentences.
