What Are Meant By Smart Drugs

Smart Drugs

Smart Drugs are nutritional supplements and pharmaceuticals which may improve memory, enhance learning, increase focus and awareness, treat neurodegenerative diseases, and slow down the aging process, as well as much more.  In fact, extremely safe drugs like Piracetam and Hydergine, can be obtained from overseas pharmacies and have been shown in well-designed studies to do all these things and more, without affecting the nervous system.

The most common meaning that comes to mind when the word ‘smart” is mentioned is intelligence.  Smart individuals are “mentally alert and bright” or “witty and clever.”  In fact so much stress is put on individuals to be smart that researchers are actually studying substances that may improve mental abilities.  These substances are called “cognitive enhancers” or “smart drugs” or “nootropics

Effects of Cognitive Enhancers

The supposed effects of cognitive enhancement can be several things.  For example, it could mean improvement of memory, learning, attention, concentration, problem solving, reasoning, social skills, decision making, planning and so forth.  However, in most instances, cognitive enhancers have been used to treat people with neurological or mental disorders, but there are a growing number of healthy, “normal” people who use these substances in hopes of getting smarter.  There are many companies taking advantage of this growing curiosity of these enhancer drugs and they are offering individuals “smart” drinks, “smart” power bars and diet supplements containing certain “smart” chemicals. See Piracetam

What Smart Drugs do

According to Dr. Ward Dean and John Morgenthaler, authors of Smart Drugs and Nutrients, these smart drugs (nootropics) are substances that improve learning memory consolidation, and memory retrieval without other central nervous system effects as with low toxicity, even at extremely high doses.  However, they do not claim to change you into some superhuman genius, as some individuals might aspire to.

Also, according to Dean and Morgenthaler, what these drugs can do is enhance such things as “Alertness, mental energy, concentration, ability to concentrate for longer periods of time, ability to memorize material, productivity, organization, planning ability, verbal memory, problem solving ability, mood, sexual desire, overall health, and performance at intellectual games such as chess or computer games.” Wow!  If that’s not enough to put some serious thought into these products, what would it take?

How These Drugs Work

Researchers are finding out that nootropics act upon the brain in different ways.  Some imitate or reproduce chemicals naturally found in the brain or produced by the brain itself.  For example, Vasopressin is a hormone required for the proper functioning of me mory.  Ordinarily produced by the pituitary gland, Vasopressin is available as a nasal spray, and supposedly works instantaneously in the enhancement of recall and memory imprint.

There are other nootropics which occur naturally, such as fish, which for as long as I can remember, has been referred to as “brain food”.  According to research, fish contains large amounts of compounds called DMAE (dimethylaminoethanol), a B-complex nutrient that is, indeed, thought by scientists to enhance brain activity by helping the brain synthesize neurotransmitters.  DMAE is now available as a nutritional supplement, and with the impending problems of the oceans pollution, taking DMAE, as a supplement alternative, might be much more beneficial and safer than ingesting fish from a polluted source.

Other natural nootropics include chocolate (partially, but not entirely, because of its caffeine), and almonds (which contain magnesium, a cognitive enhancer and stress reducer).  Many naturally-occurring nootropics, such as Vincamine (an extract of the periwinkle), are said to enhance cognition in a more general way, by improving the flow of blood and oxygen to the brain.

Besides natural and/or nutritional nootropics, there are also powerful pharmaceutical nootropics, and smart drug users all have their favorites.  According to a local nootropic enthusiast, John Posner, “The basis of any good smart drug regimen is two pharmaceutical nootropics, hydergine and piracetam.    However, there is no drug company in this country that is willing to make piracetam because they can’t make hugh profits on it.  In addition to the memory and cognition enhancers, hydergine and piracetem, Posner recommends the use of choline, a B-complex vitamin necessary for your body to manufacture acetylcholine (a neurotransmitter required for imprinting and accessing memories).

One of the most important way nootropics such as hydergine and piracetam can enhance cognition is by helping to cleanse the brain of a substance called lipofuscin—a fatty material that interferes with the brain’s synapses, preventing them from releasing neurotransmitters that  enable the communication of information among nerve cells.  Lipofuscin is a product of the buildup of free radicals, which are molecules with a free—that is, unpaired—electron.

According to studies Piracetam enhances cognition under conditions of hypoxia (too little oxygen), and also enhances memory and some kinds of learning in normal humans. Outside of the US, piracetam is used to treat alcoholism, stroke, vertigo, senile dementia, sickle cell anemia, dyslexia, and numerous other health problems.

One of the most intriguing effects of piracetam is that it promotes the flow of information between the right and left hemispheres of the brain. We know that the communication between the two sides of the brain is associated with flashes of creativity. This may also be the basis for piracetam's usefulness in the treatment of dyslexia.

The effect of piracetam can be increased if taken with DMAE, centrophenoxine, choline, or Hydergine. When choline and piracetam are taken together there is a synergistic effect that causes a greater improvement in memory than the sum of each when taken alone.

Great Potential

In conclusion, smart drugs promise to do a lot of good.  Many individuals have already embarked on the use of these products, such as Provigil, to cope with nightshift work, jet lag and lack of sleep, and suffer few side-effects, if any.  Many others use beta-blockers to overcome anxiety and stress of performance.  Studies prove that scientists use off-label drugs to increase their focus.  If that helps them to be better able to solve impending problems, so much the better.  If chemical assistance can help increase the useful human lifespan, the benefits could be huge.
