Club Drugs

Club drugs are nothing new. They have been around for years. They are extremely popular at night clubs and all-night dance parties such as “raves” or “trances,” and bars. Some of the drugs that fall under this category are Ecstasy, also known s MDMA, Rohypnol, Ketamine, LSD, and methamphetamine. These compounds are potent and fall under the category of psychoactive drugs. These club drugs can cause serious side effects and can be hazardous to your health. To create an even larger concern is the fact that the targeted group for these substances seem to be teens and young adults, who tend to be less cautious. If these drugs are mixed with alcohol the consequences can be grave.

These drugs were once thought of as city drugs, but are becoming more mainstreamed, and becoming increasingly available and growing in popularity. When you think of the club scene you think recreation drugs.

What is Meant By “Raves”

They are all night dance parties that originated in Europe in the mid-1980s and have gained popularity in the U.S. in the 1990s. These parties are mostly attended by teens and young adults. The organizers of these parties continue to put them on and they have become increasingly popular and more sophisticated—more alluring. They create a very casual atmosphere where rave-goers dress in comfortable attire, pretty much anything goes and these parties are held in empty warehouses, fields and dance clubs. These are all night parties and usually start at dusk and end and dawn and recreational ‘club drugs’ are plentiful!

Warnings When Using these Drugs

These club drugs are potent and serious business. They can potentially be harmful even if taken alone. However, if taken in combination or with alcohol the potential for serious harm is doubled. Research has shown that abusing these drugs can cause permanent damage and even death. A drug interaction can occur if taken with two or more drugs during the same period of time. This alters the effects of the drugs, and that is where the problem arises. If you are taking prescription medications and you take these drugs that, too, can cause a serious interaction.

Popular Drugs at Clubs

Methamphetamine (”Speed,” “Meth”) – this drug is appealing because of its heightened physical and mental performance. This is very popular among the club scene. It also alters mood in various ways depending on how it is taken. Whether it is snorted, which causes euphoria, but nothing intense or smoking or intravenous injection, where the user experiences an intense “rush” which may last for a few minutes. Regardless of how it is taken the drug stimulates the central nervous system, with effects lasting anywhere from six hours to all day. However, this drug has a high potential for abuse, because after it wears off, the individuals often feel lethargic and depressed and obviously desires more to attain that great feeling of euphoria—hence the addiction sets in and a high potential for abuse occurs. Unfortunately an increase in potency of recreational drugs has potential for causing serious side effects and even death.

Ecstasy (”X,” “E,” “MDMA”) – this, too, is very appealing because of its pleasurable effects which include a relaxed upbeat mood, reduced anxiety, increased sensitivity to others and a high energy level that last for hours. Although Ecstasy is not physically addictive, because of its pleasurable feelings it often becomes very desirable, especially among clubbers and some people become rather compulsive in their use of ecstasy, which borders on addiction.

Gamma Hydroxy Butyrate (”GHB,” “Liquid X,” “Grievous Bodily Harm”) – this drug falls in the category of a depressant which affects the central nervous system, and its primary use is to obtain a feeling of euphoria—producing a relaxed, calm state. However, in large doses individuals experience nausea, drowsiness, respiratory distress, seizures and amnesia. It is no secret that this drug has caused serious side effects, including poisonings and deaths, which are well documented.

Ketamine (”K,” “Special K,” “Vitamin K,” “Super Acid”) – this is a non-barbiturate, rapid-acting dissociative anesthetic which separates perception from sensation. It can cause dependency, because of this fact, and is a way for people to escape everyday life problems. This is a very potent serious drug and if combined with protease inhibitors can lead to inflammation of the liver, causing jaundice, and possible liver damage which could result in serious consequences. However, further studies need to be done in this area.

We have briefly touched on this topic. As you are aware, there are many potential forms of abuse going on as a result of these so called, “club drugs”—too many to go into. However, you, the consumer, should educate yourself before experimenting with these drugs and remember, drug interactions are serious and whether they are recreational or prescription drugs, individuals should use caution. Therefore, be aware of what you are taking—and do not abuse drugs!
