GBL
The ways that people look to get high are always increasing and this is leading to higher risks being taken by many users. It seems as though the buzz and high of one drug wears off, a new drug appears on the market for people to take in an attempt to get even higher. Parallels can be drawn with the way that people will take more of any prescription drug to get better treatment but the influx of GBL is causing a lot of concern. To give it its full name, Gamma Butyrolactone, GBL for short has risen to prominence sharply and shares many similarities with GHB, the “date-rape” drug. There has been a lot of media attention on this drug in recent years and this new addition is sure to keep the media aware of any fatalities caused by use of these drugs.
When in the body, GBL metabolises in a person’s stomach and in their blood. Compared to GHB, GBL lasts for a longer period and takes less time to kick in. The reactions from the two drugs are around the same level but GBL appears to be the more powerful of the two. This causes a concern for people used to taking GHB as they will be liable to take a bigger dosage than what they would normally require. Normal use of GBL can cause serious problems to a persons innards causing sever irritation along the way.
Short doses of GBL can cause people to feel a high that is close to euphoria and can positively impact on the libido. This is a key reason why it is being taken in a number of clubs around the country and the use of GBL is strongly associated with the younger generation who go to clubs and with the gay community. Although the drug can be used by anyone with a similar reaction and response occurring, usage has definitely been more prominent within the group of people who are known to frequent homosexual clubs.
In small doses there are positive feelings that the users associate with the drug but too much of it can cause severe problems to a person’s health. Even a small overdose of GBL is known to cause nausea and at times lead to people losing consciousness but that is only half of the problems that can arise from use. There have been cases of people collapsing and dying from using the drug in clubs.
The substance is commonly found in industrial cleaners that are commonly used to remove graffiti from walls. It is easy to imagine the strength of this drug and if it is capable of removing paint from walls, what will it do inside a person’s body? This is the question that most people should be asking themselves if they find that they are being offered this drug.
In some of the severest cases that have been discovered, GBL has been stated as the chief reason in people falling into comas or even dieing. When mixed with alcohol there are even greater chances of the person suffering from an overdose and given the way that GBL is largely used in clubs, this is a common mixture that many people are taking.
A major source of concern is the way that GBL has infiltrated into the gay community and is causing havoc in the clubs. Much more than ecstasy, GBL is having a major impact on the society and life of the people who frequent these bars and clubs.
