Although not as common as other performance enhancing drugs, use of amphetamine can give an advantage to athletes. Amphetamine abuse has certainly played a key role in endurance events like the Tour de France.

Away from sporting stars, the use of amphetamine has also been widely credited amongst many militaries. It is now common knowledge that the vast majority of fighter pilots on long missions use the substance to keep awake. The widespread use during World War II is common knowledge and it is believed that amphetamine use still plays a large part for today’s combat. Parallels can be drawn to long distance truck drivers taking large quantities of amphetamine to allow them to drive continuously. This allows them to drive for longer without breaks, ensuring they meet deadlines.

Given the widespread use of amphetamine, it is clear that many people are affected by use of the drug and the dependency that people can place upon it.
