What is GHB

GHB (Gamma Hydroxy Butyrate or Gamma Hydroxybutyric Acid, Sodium Oxybate) is basically a degreasing solvent found in floor cleaning products or stripper mixed with drain cleaner, nail polish and super glue removers.

In the early 1960s, scientists tested Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) as a potential anesthetic.  Since then, the drug has been researched in connection with treatment of narcolepsy (when a person has brief attacks of deep sleep) and alcohol dependence.

GHB gained status in the 1980s and early 1990s among bodybuilders, because it stimulates growth hormone releases.  However, most recently, GHB has become more popular as a drug of abuse with the street names Cherry Meth, Gamma-OH, Liquid E, Fantasy, Georgia Home Boy, Grievous Bodily Harm, Liquid X, Scoop, Water, Everclear, Great Hormones at Bedtime, GBH, Soap, Easy Lay, Salty Water G-Riffick, Cherry Meth and Organic Quaalude, Gamma 10, and Jib.

As a result of this, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) began an intensive investigation of GHB banning the sale and distribution of GHB by the end of 1990.  In 1991 enforcement began and today it can be legitimately obtained for investigational purposes only.  The FDA concluded that GHB is considered a drug with high potential for abuse, and there are no FDA approved uses for it.

Description

GHB is a clear liquid, which looks just like water and, be aware, for it can easily be mistaken for water because it is usually found in a small (30ml) clear plastic bottle, a water bottle, or even Gatorade bottles, which contains several doses. However, all you have to do is take a sip, and you will know it is not water.  It may also be found in a white powder form, although not as common.

Effects of Drug

GHB temporarily inhibits release of dopamine in the brain, and then causes increased dopamine storage and release.  This creates the general feeling of well-being and alertness the “morning after” among people who take high doses of the drug.  GHB also stimulates pituitary growth hormone releases.

Some other effects are intoxication, increased energy, happiness, talking, desire to socialize, feeling affectionate and playful, mild loss of inhibition, sensuality, enhanced sexual experience, muscle relaxation, loss of coordination due to loss of muscle tone, possible nausea, difficulty concentrating, and loss of gag reflex.

Many individuals, depending on the dose and the user, may experience bad to severe reactions.  These can include nausea, headaches, drowsiness, dizziness, amnesia, vomiting, loss of muscle control, respiratory problems, loss of consciousness, being conscious but unable to move, and death, especially when combined with alcohol or other drugs.

Individuals who overdose often need emergency room care.  Most people regain consciousness in two to four hours; however, between 1995 and 2005, medical examiners reported detecting GHB in 224 fatal cases.  Fifty-three percent of these deaths involved the use of GHB in combination with alcohol and other drugs.  However, GHB was determined the sole cause of death in 38 percent of those cases.

Warning Signs of Overdose

Warning signs of GHB overdose may include:  Vomiting, severe headache, very slow breathing and heart rate, withdrawal symptoms like insomnia, anxiety, tremors, and sweating, memory loss, difficulty breathing, and loss of consciousness.  Therefore if you experience one or more of these symptoms after consumption of GHB, it is imperative that you get to a hospital immediately.  Because GHB leaves the body’s system relatively quickly, it is not easily detected by medical tests.  Therefore, it is important to tell a medical provider that you have been using GHB, so that you can get appropriate medical care.
Tragically, GHB can easily be slipped into someone’s drink undetected.  So, if you start to experience any of the aforementioned symptoms that do not correspond with what you are drinking, get help immediately.

Popular Among Teenagers and Young Adults

The use of GHB in college campuses continues to be a growing problem.  Many students are enthralled with GHB, mostly because of its euphoric effects.  However, accurate information is so scarce about GHB that the majority of college students using it have no knowledge that they are putting their lives in danger.  The information on most web sites is so misleading regarding GHB that some college students actually believe the myth that GHB is a safe supplement.  Many male students are attracted to its use for its reputed reputation as a muscle enhancer, while other students may find themselves using it as a sleep aid, especially in noisy dorms.  GHB can easily be concealed in a college dorm room, so its use can go undetected, unlike the use of alcohol.  Many universities and colleges have had so many problems with the use of GHB on their campuses, that they are now faced with educating their students on this dangerous and deadly drug.

In September of 1999, Glamour Magazine did a survey of over 1000 female students at more that 20 colleges and universities.  The survey revealed that 19% of those asked know someone who has been a victim of GHB.

Addictive

Research indicates that GHB is highly addictive and habitual use, even for just a few weeks, can lead to physical and psychological dependence.  There are not a lot statistics on GHB abuse, but the availability information suggests that GHB abuse is growing.  There are a number of reported cases of GHB addiction and it appears that once someone is addicted GHB is harder to kick than cocaine or heroin.

Treatment Options are being developed, but remain limited.  Because of the severity of withdrawal symptoms from GHB, it is imperative to have professional help when detoxing from GHB.  Withdrawal can include delirium, disorientation, and hallucinations that may last up to two weeks.

Beware, before engaging in GHB, take note of all the harm it may do to your body and remember, GHB is illegal and its possession, use, manufacture and sale carry heavy prison sentences.
